POW Oral History Project: Goals and Objectives
The projects main goal is the collection,
transcription, and permanent preservation in archive and library locations of
the prisoner of war experiences of Minnesotans held captive during the Second
World War. A second goal is to increase public awareness of the POW
experience. The final goal is to facilitate student involvement with
history by helping them assume integral roles in this project.
To help meet these goals, this
project has four specific objectives: - to generate
an archive of 100 fully transcribed POW interviews, in both print and digital
forms, striving throughout to achieve a balance of experiences: from both
World War Two, at different camps and locations of captivity;
- to provide
broad public access to the transcribed interviews and any accompanying
materials, by housing the print or digital material in a minimum of twenty
state, regional, and national archives and libraries, and constructing a
project website to be hosted by Concordia University, St Paul;
- to construct
a digital database of 100 items (photographs, personal documents, maps, and
resource links), and place this on the project website;
- to encourage
and further develop an understanding of history methods and practices among
students of history by incorporating them into all stages of the project:
initial contacts; interviewing, researching and building a reference and photo
database; identifying state, county, and local libraries and archives for the
housing of finished project materials.
